In a script I've the following for testing:

global $icmsConfigUser;

echo
$icmsConfigUser['use_captcha'];
exit;

In the Preferences -> Captcha Settings I select Anonymous Users only.
After being logged out I visit the script and it prints: 1

Now I deselect the group Anonymous Users, log out and visit the script again. Now it prints: 1

Why is it printing in both cases 1?

Did I make a mistake somewhere?

use_captcha returns 1 if you have set up to use captcha and 0 if captcha is disabled.

Almost, it's the captcha on/off setting for the registration form.

Thought it was for determining if a user group should see the captcha yes or no.

I just add the captcha to the form, and the system seems to figure out for itself whether it should actually be displayed, and to whom.

Yes, I noticed this also. Yesterday I removed

$icmsConfigUser
['use_captcha']
yesterday from the captcha code in the forms of some modules.
